Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates to fill the position of Director of Operations for the National Food Reserve Agency (NFRA), tenable at its Head Office in Kanengo, Lilongwe. 


National Food Reserve Agency (NFRA) is a statutory corporation established in 1999 as a Trust responsible for the management of the country’s Strategic Grain Reserves (SGR).  The Agency has storage facilities in the form of silos in Kanengo, Mzuzu, Mangochi and Luchenza and multipurpose warehouses in Kanengo, Limbe, Bangula and Kazomba.



The Director of Operations shall be responsible to the Chief Executive Officer to ensure that the Strategic Grain Reserves are well maintained and managed.



Under the general direction of the Chief Executive Officer, the Operations Director’s key responsibilities will include, but not be limited to, the following: -

  1. Developing, implementing, monitoring and reviewing operational policies and guidelines
  2. Overseeing maintenance of Silo and warehouse machines, equipment and infrastructure
  3. Maintaining grain quality whilst in storage
  4. Ensuring that spare parts, chemicals for fumigation, and other consumables are timely procured and properly managed
  5. Planning and budgeting for the Operations Department
  6. Ensuring that targets and quality standards are met
  7. Maintaining proper Strategic Grain Reserve records
  8. Servicing the Operations Committee of the Board of Trustees
  9. Any other duties as may be assigned from time to time



The suitable candidate for the position must have a minimum of the following:

  1. A proven Bachelor’s Degree in Agriculture (Preferably Crop Science, General Agriculture) by National Council for Higher Education (NCHE);
  2. Master’s Degree in either of the following fields Agriculture, Business Administration (MBA), Strategic Management, Mechanical Engineering;
  3. Five (5) years working experience at a senior position. Those with experience in post-harvest storage management, silo and warehouse management will have an added advantage.



The ideal candidate for the position must:

  1. Have excellent knowledge of Grain and Silo management
  2. Have proven superior leadership and high level of managerial skills
  3. Demonstrate an understanding of good cooperate governance
  4. Be results oriented
  5. Have excellent communication (writing and presentation) and interpersonal skills
  6. Be of high integrity, honest and have excellent negotiating skills.



The successful candidate shall be offered a performance related contract for a period of three (3) years with an attractive salary, benefits and gratuity packages commensurate with seniority of the position and qualifications of the candidate.
