In a significant boost to Malawi’s food security operations, the World Food Programme (WFP) has donated a high-capacity generator to the National Food Reserve Agency (NFRA), ensuring a reliable power supply for the Kanengo silos in Lilongwe. This critical contribution addresses one of NFRA’s biggest operational challenges: electricity outages that disrupt the receipt, storage, and dispatch of maize, particularly during periods of high demand, such as the lean season.
The generator installation was made possible through a collaborative effort between WFP and the Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DoDMA), underscoring the importance of coordinated action in strengthening Malawi’s disaster preparedness.
This partnership between WFP and NFRA forms part of a broader initiative aimed at reinforcing food and nutrition security across Malawi. Their joint efforts contribute to ensuring that Malawi’s food reserves are maintained and that vital emergency responses are not hindered by power interruptions.
NFRA expresses its deep appreciation to both WFP and DoDMA for their continued support in this critical endeavour. With the new generator in place, NFRA is now better positioned to fulfil its mandate of safeguarding the nation’s food reserves and enhancing resilience against future emergencies.
